Orbea Expands Production in Portugal; Stops in China
MALLABIA, Spain – Bike maker Orbea is expanding its assembly capabilities at the company’s plant in Portugal. Orbea is buying a 8,000m² facility and is equipping it for state-of-the art assembly.
Whether Orbea’s decision to expand in Portugal is related to the current initiatives to establish a ‘Bike Valley’ in Portugal where next to bike production facilities also numerous parts producers are to be located, is not stated in the company’s announcement. However, the company’s press release mentions that the expansion of its Portuguese facility aims to enhance service speed, flexibility and customization.
Increased customizing potential
In a press release issued today the Spanish bike maker also states that it is increasing the customizing potential of its production center in Mallabia, Spain. “Likewise, we are giving a boost to our logistics and soft good development platform in Hong Kong, and investing in the modernization of our logistics facility in the USA.”
Stop on manufacturing in China
Orbea mentions further in its press release, “As part of this systems overhaul, we have decided to stop manufacturing in our plant in Kunshan as from 30 June 2015. This decision has nothing to do with our business activity in the Chinese market, where we are planning to make significant changes for a stronger presence.
All this restructuring is expected to improve service and make us more competitive as we focus on the traditional pillars of our business: European manufacturing, flexibility, customization and efficient service.”
