A&J Enterprises, Moore Large’s main Taiwanese supplier, plans to open a bike assembly plant this May in the UK. According to a Moore Large press release, the new site will enable the Derby-based company to double the amount of UK-built bikes it sells. More Large is A&J Enterprises only UK customer.

The move is not unexpected because dumping duties imposed on bikes of Far
Eastern origin make it more economic for overseas companies to assemble in
the European Union, bypassing punitive, projectionist duties. Giant has been successfully operating this model for many years. The news from Moore Large is expected to be the first of many such moves.
In 1999, More Large assembled 50,000 dual suspension bikes at its Derby factory.

“The tremendous success of Barracuda has caused us to look at expanding the
assembly of cycles, but space restrictions and low unemployment in our area
makes this difficult,” said John Moore.
In addition to their own production, Moore Large will be supplied by A&J Europe
Bicycle Manufacturing Ltd., a UK registered company that is a wholly owned
subsidiary of A&J Enterprise (Taiwan).
The current sales director of Moore Large, Jon Edwards, has been named managing director of the new assembly operation. He assumes his new position on 1 March. A factory site has yet to be chosen although an announcement is expected within the next 10 days.
This year A&J Europe Bicycle Manufacturing Ltd. will supply Moore Large with their
assembled bikes. In 2001 Edwards says he will be looking for other “Moore Large type companies” throughout the European Union.
In other news, Gary Mather, made a full Moore Large board member in November last year, and currently in charge off mail order sales, has been named the new Moore Large Sales Director. (CR)
