TURKU, Finland (14 April 2000)–At the end of March the Finnish manufacturer of bicycles and fitness equipment Tunturi Oy Ltd. moved to a new factory. The new site has been tailor-made for Tunturi and was built (and is owned) by an institutional investor, who invested EUR8.4 million in the 13,500 square meter site. Tunturi, which has a long-term lease, has acquired new manufacturing machinery.
Previously Tunturi worked in two wholly-owned factories located 10 kilometers from each other. However, much of the production space was not being used and the older of the two sites was no longer suitable for bicycle production. The sales of both sites will contribute greatly to the company’s balance sheet. “There new factory improves our operations in many ways,” says Mr. Pasi Lohikko, managing director. “The flow of the goods is smoother, and there is no room for idle moving parts or assembles, so it forces us to adopt quick and efficient manufacturing.”
Tunturi is owned by Merita Nordbanken, the largest commercial bank in Finland. The move is a strong sign that Tunturi is serious about establishing itself as a strong brand in Finland. (HK)
