NEW YORK, USA (August 22)- According to the Wall Street Journal Daimler-Chrysler will soon see its current European city car Smart in USA. But in the US the Smart will have an electric motor. Racing car mogul Don Panoz will ship a total of 15,000 Smarts to the USA within the next five years. Panoz will buy these Smart cars without engines and will equip them in the USA with electric engines. The mentioned amount of 15,000 Smart cars is four times more than the total amount of electric cars currently in use on US roads. It’s Panoz’ plan to run these Smart cars via a rental system in highly-populated US cities. Rental stations are planned at subway stations, office buildings, shopping centers and apartment houses. For producer Daimler-Chrysler itself the deal with Panoz is said to be a “risk-free way to introduce and check the chances for this two-seat-vehicle on the US market”. As soon as Daimler-Chrysler agrees with Panoz, his company eMotion Mobility LLC will open its first e-Smart rental station in Atlanta. (JB)
