RHEDA-WIEDENBRÜCK, Germany (August 11) – There are serious talks about a possible takeover of wholesaler Epple Zweirad GmbH by Prophete GmbH & Co. A decision will be taken ‘within ten days’, says Prophete’s Berthold Lönne. Prophete acquired the bicycle brands Rabeneick, and (VSF) Fahrradmanufaktur and put them together with the company’s own brands Bulltec and Kreidler to form the Fachhandelszentrum Oldenburg. Prophete itself serves the mass merchant channel and Fachhandelszentrum Oldenburg serves the IBD market. Epple Zweirad GmbH (GM: Manfred Neun) in Memmingen (Bavaria) has a subsidiary in Bindlach near Bayreuth. It is one of the traditional bicycle wholesalers in Germany. Earlier this year there were rumours that Epple had financial trouble, but according to insiders these have been solved. Epple serves the IBD channel with the GT and Epple bike brands. (JB)
