Over the last two years the 2008 Stinger 60 has been the wheel of choice for two pro-tour teams in the cobblestone classics and cyclo cross. Team HTC – Columbia and Team Sky were successfully using HED Stinger wheels in the spring classics. HED took this experience and knowledge to build a complete new wheel: the Stinger 5.

The wide rim is specifically designed for 25mm or wider tires and includes extra plies of carbon for more durability. The special carbon layer lay-up creates a more comfortable and therefore more controlled ride on very rough surfaces. The SCT (stability control system) shape of the 50mm aero profile of the rim is optimized for handling on crosswinds. This also creates better control of the bike. The weight of this wheel set is 1407gram.

The new road wheel Stinger 7 is a direct result of the cooperation between HED and the sprinters of the Team HTC – Columbia. The carbon lay-up of the rim allows for a greater lateral rigidity and therefore improves fast cornering and sprinting. Despite its 70mm deep aero rim the Stinger 7 outperforms other aero wheels with similar rim depths while it maintains excellent handling performance in crosswinds thanks to HED’s SCT technology. Except for ProTour riders this is the deepest wheel HED recommends for road races.
