BB Expert Thun Announces Compatibility with Gates Carbon Drive
ENNEPETAL, Germany – Bottom bracket specialist Thun will launch a series of new BB cartridges at Eurobike 2015 that will match the new five-arm Gates Carbon Drive crankset produced by leading belt drive supplier Gates Corporation.
The Volta series by Thun will ensure a precise belt line for Gates’ new lower-priced bicycle drive, CDN, which was introduced at the Taipei Cycle 2015 with the goal of helping manufacturers produce belt-driven bikes with an end-user price between € 750 and € 1500.
“The CDN system is really important for reaching higher-volume models,” says Karlheinz Nicolai, founder of Universal Transmission, the exclusive distributor of Gates Carbon Drive in Europe. “Function and fitting accuracy are unparalleled in this price segment. Thun is the perfect partner. Not just because of its high-quality BB sets, but also due to the fact that the cooperation allows us to offer assembling OEMs a system that is kept simple through a reduction of components while offering the perfect performance.”
Gates and Thun’s co-development
The companies Thun and Gates are known to the bicycle industry as reliable manufacturers of components for drive systems. The CDN drive includes a smartly designed Gates five arm crank with square taper. In order for the new Gates CDN belt, manufactured in Europe, to precisely align with the large variety of rear wheel hubs, Gates and Thun co-developed a series of BB cartridges that perfectly match the new Gates crank.
Nicolai actively oversaw the development process with Thun. Since January 2015 the three companies have been working jointly on this project. The complete system will be presented for the first time at the Eurobike booth of Universal Transmissions/Gates – Hall A2, Booth 202.
