BRUSSELS, Belgium (19 October) The European Commission is looking to narrow down the definition of sports shoes. The redefinition has everything to do with the influx of footwear coming out of China and Vietnam. Currently, technical sports shoes (including cycling footwear) can be imported duty free. The rising number of imports is taking its toll on Italy’s and Europe’s traditional shoe sector. By excluding hiking, mountaineering and other footwear from the duty-free list, the European Commission could boost home production. (OB)
