BRUSSEL, Belgium – To support the need for an intra-industry forum and stakeholder platform the ECF launches a Europe-wide Platform on Bicycle Sharing & Systems (PEBSS), as part of its CIC (Cycling Industry Club) network.

“The CIC warmly welcomes companies with similar objectives; we’re thrilled to spur forward smarter shared bicycle mobility across Europe; it’s a guaranteed accelerator to grow cycling usage everywhere, making it the fulcrum of smart urban mobility,” said CIC’s chairman and Cycleurope’s President Tony Grimaldi on the new initiative of ECF.

Why this platform?

“The smart mobility evolution is here, and accelerating rapidly: Big Data, Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS), and Smart Cities are setting the agenda,” explains Paul Stratta ECF’s Project Director – Cycling For Growth. “Rapid growth in private fleet-based bicycle systems, as well as innovation within traditional public bicycle share (PBS) schemes and now electric bicycle share, support the urgent need for an intra-industry forum and stakeholder platform here in Europe.”

The Platform on Bicycle Sharing & Systems’ key dual-objectives are:
1) to share bicycle mobility best practices, making them more accessible so collaborative synergies can be developed;
2) to harness the political and investment resources to grow smarter bicycle sharing and allied systems all across the region.

Paul Stratta points out that the platform is aimed at traditional PBS providers, system operators, ‘connected bicycle’ manufacturers, peer-to-peer system facilitators, corporate leasing, cargo/rickshaw services, as well as related suppliers and stakeholders, including NGOs. Cities/urban planning organisations who operate their own local systems are also very much welcomed.

“The ECF through its Cycling Industry Club is uniquely placed to drive forward this Platform for European Bicycle Sharing & Systems (PEBSS),” Stratta continues. “The CIC’s track record of providing trusted, neutral, and collaborative frameworks will ensure a fertile forum for this intra-industry dialogue, directly contributing towards accelerating cycling usage in Europe.”

‘Collaborate to grow’

One of the initial supporters of PEBSS Nextbike’s Director for International Development, Sebastian Schlebusch, commented, “We are committed to seeing ECF’s PEBSS initiative succeed; our bike sharing industry here in Europe must collaborate to grow the significance of cycling within the rapidly changing mobility industry, and deliver the smart solutions for our smart cities.” Others who have already shown interest in the PBESS are Cycleurope, Smoove, PON, ElectricFeel, BikePlus, Stage Intelligence, the Accell Group, and the North American Bikeshare Association (NABSA).

Launch at Velo-city

PEBSS’ inaugural launch will take place on Monday 12 June 2017, the day preceding ECF’s Velo-city Conference in the Arnhem-Nijmegen city region of the Netherlands. Various working meetings of the PEBSS will be programmed to coincide with bicycle trade show events such as the Taipei Cycle Show this March, and Eurobike in August.
