MADRID, Spain(6 March 2000)–Under enormous protests the Spanish government recently introduced a law requiring the country’s cyclists to wear helmets. The helmet requirements is part of a new initiative meant to make all forms of traffic safer. Cyclists are only required to wear helmets outside of city limits.
The new initiative also states that Spanish cyclists no longer have the right away at intersections. Similarly, cyclists are required to wear reflective clothing at night and in inclement weather. The new law also forbids cycling on the more important provincial roads.
Special interest groups are asking bicycle tourists to avoid vacations in Spain in protest of the new law. (JW)
