ISO Fork Test Not In Line With Daily Usage?

GENEVA, Switzerland – The recall of Merida’s 2017 Scultura CF2 carbon fork included a statement by the Taiwanese manufacturer that there is no international test-standard which includes proving the fork-stem’s durability under the forces introduced by the handlebar. Is this a recurring issue in international standards?

Merida issued a voluntarily recall as the steerer of their Scultura CF2 fork proved not able to withstand the stresses and strains these forks were exposed to on the road. According to the bicycle manufacturer the steerer underneath the clamp of the stem and spacers can develop fractures which can lead to a complete collapse of the fork. This is what happened with the bikes of an Italian amateur team.

How could this happen with a product that ran external lab-tests of the fork-stem combination?

Homologation

In the recall Bike Europe published last week Merida announced to have tested the forks beyond the norm, including the ISO 4210. “However, just the lower part of the front-fork is covered by legal standards within defined testing programs and not the combination fork-stem-handlebar. Also the Scultura fork went through the test program and got homologation of high-level product safety,” Merida stated. Nevertheless the Taiwan company was faced with three cracked forks.
