Future President Joins Board of Shimano’s Biggest Subsidiary
EINDHOVEN, the Netherlands – Taizo Shimano has joined Shimano Europe’s Board. He is the son of Keizo Shimano who was the company’s top technician; the inventor of for instance, Dual Control who passed away much too early. Taizo Shimano’s new role brings him a step closer to his predestined position as President of the world’s biggest bike component maker.
Taizo Shimano was Executive Vice President, Supervisor of the companies’ fishing tackle division as well as Chief of Marketing of the bicycle components division. He joins the Board of the newly structured Shimano Europe B.V.
Shimano Europe is by far the biggest subsidiary of the Osaka, Japan based parts maker. According to a October 2016 Credit Suisse report Europe accounts for close to 60% of Shimano’s sales while North America stands at 18%, China 7%, Japan 6% and others at 13%.
Simplifying business operations
The structure of Shimano Europe has been changed recently in a move aimed at consolidating and simplifying business operations. Shimano Europe will bring its bike and fishing divisions and its bikefitting.com division into one centralized company. For that the three companies – Shimano Europe B.V., Shimano Europe Fishing Holding B.V. and bikefitting.com B.V. – have been merged into Shimano Europe Holding B.V., which has also been renamed Shimano Europe B.V.
New Board members
Coinciding with these changes, two new members will join Shimano Europe’s Board from Shimano’s executives. They are Taizo Shimano and Hiroshi Matsui (Senior Vice President, business administration department general operations division). At the same time current board member Yoshihiro Hirata will step down. Marc van Rooij and Satoshi Yuasa will remain members of the board.
In the daily operation a newly-formed Executive Committee will lead Shimano Europe. Frank Peiffer joined the Executive Committee as VP Bike of the Shimano Europe Group, while Arjen Vinke has been appointed as MD of Shimano’s European sales offices. The tasks of Marc van Rooij (President Shimano Europe) and Cor Ax (MD fishing tackle division) will not change in the Executive Committee.
Furthermore Thom van Egmond joined Shimano Europe in the position of CFO in the Executive Committee. He previously worked at Unilever for 22 years, having spent 16 years at Unilever offices in Singapore, Italy and Morocco, holding senior functions in finance, supply chain and change management.
Board member changes will also take place at Rapala Shimano Eastern Europe with Taizo Shimano also becoming a board member here, replacing resigning board member Satoshi Yuasa.
Bike shop mechanic
Taizo Shimano joined Shimano in 1991. He started his career at a bike shop in Stuttgart, Germany as mechanic before progressing to management positions. In September 2009 Taizo Shimano was the first top manager of the company who revealed that the world’s leading bike component manufacturer was working on its own range of parts for electric bicycles.
At that time it was already said that Taizo Shimano is to be the next President of the world’s biggest bike component maker. Currently Yozo Shimano is President of Shimano Inc.
