E-Bike Import Shows Vast Growth in 2015
DOETINCHEM, the Netherlands – The amount of ground gained in the sale of electric bicycles across Europe’s main markets is underlined by comparing import figures for 2015 to those of 2014. They account for close to 50% import growth!
A figure that’s even higher when taking the UK into account. Including the import figures of the United Kingdom in the total import of e-bikes and speed e-bikes then a huge 70% growth is recorded. However, the data for the UK shows anomalies.
Import from inside and outside EU
Due to these anomalies this reports covers the import (from inside and outside the EU) of e-bikes and speed e-bikes into France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. Those imports totaled 970,000 units, an increase of close to 310,000 units on the 2014 total. This accounts for a sizable 46.8% import growth.
Spain shows biggest growth
For the listed five main EU markets, the biggest import growth recorded by Eurostat is for Spain. E-bike and speed e-bike imports into the country more than doubled in 2015; from 41,000 to 96,000 units – a huge growth of 134.6%.
Germany and the Netherlands
Europe’s already well-developed markets for electric bicycles, as well as speed e-bikes including e-MTB’s, which are Germany and the Netherlands, also show impressive import growth figures. In the Netherlands imports grew by close to 90,000 units to a total of 240,000. It equals 58.3% growth compared to the 2014 import number.
In Germany imports were up by some 155,000 units to a total of 443,000, representing an import growth figure of 54.4%.
France and Italy
In France only a small growth in imports was recorded; by 5.2% to a total of 131,000 units. In units the total was up by about 6,500.
Also in Italy only a small growth in the number of imported e-bike and speed e-bikes was recorded for 2015, compared to 2014. A 4.2% increase, from some 55,000 units to 57,300.
E-bikes versus speed e-bikes
Of the total import of 970,000 e-bikes and speed e-bikes in these five main EU markets, 75% were regular 25km/h – 250 watt electric bicycles. But, speed e-bike imports recorded huge growth in 2015. About a quarter of a million speed e-bikes were imported into France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. This number was up by about 111,000 units compared to the 2014 total. This accounts for growth of 84.4%!
The import of regular electric bicycles was up by 198,000 units, to a total of 727,000 units – a 37.4% growth.
