EU Cycling Strategy Handover at Velo-City
ARNHEM, the Netherlands – Velo-city 2017 will welcome the EU Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, for the official handover of the blueprint EU Cycling Strategy. Velo-city is the annual global cycling summit taking place this year in the Dutch cities of Arnhem and Nijmegen.
For four days, from Tuesday June 13 to Friday June 16, “Freedom of Cycling” is addressed by international speakers and delegates, innovative ideas, research, excursions and workshops.
The EU Cycling Strategy is all about encouraging more people to cycle more often across the Europe. In particular as it has the potential to unlock socio-economic benefits worth billions of euro’s. Stakeholders from various backgrounds have therefore joined forces to develop a blueprint for the EU Cycling Strategy, lead by the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF). The Strategy will recommend objectives and define actions falling within EU competence. Published at the Velo-city 2017 conference in June it will then be submitted to the European Commission as a new inspiration for action.
Comprehensive guidance on cycling policies
In addition to the socio-economic benefits of cycling, local and regional governments would also benefit from the EU Cycling Strategy as it would provide a more comprehensive guidance on cycling policies and actions to be taken, and facilitate a better exchange of good practices. Most importantly, it could attract more European funds to support the development of cycling infrastructures and to integrate cycling into the multi-modal transport system.
