LONDON, United Kingdom (1 August 2000) — Less than a week after the Dutch publisher VNU purchased Miller-Freeman’s US businesses from MFI Holding Inc., its English-Dutch competitor Reed-Elsevier bought Miller-Freeman’s European businesses. Reed-Elsevier is the umbrella company of Elsevier Business Information (EBI), publisher of Bike Europe and the Dutch bicycle dealer journal Tweewieler. According to Miller-Freeman Germany, the Dutch publishing giant VNU acquired Miller-Freeman Holding Inc. for a total of US$ 650 million. The deal includes the US-American international bicycle trade show Interbike (Las Vegas) and OutDoor Show (Salt Lake City) as well as Miller-Freeman Sports Group’s trade publications such as Bicycle Retailer & Industry News, Outdoor Retailer, Sporting Goods Business and others. Miller-Freeman Europe is a leading European communications provider and trade show organizer. It owns over 100 exhibitions – the European fitness show FIBO and the horse show Equitana in Germany, for example – and 66 exhibition-related websites. Bike Europe’s parent company acquired Miller-Freeman Europe for a total of US$ 546 million. The acquisition is a clear indication that publisher Reed-Elsevier is upping its focus on the European trade show business. (JB)
