Zipp’s Project Firecrest Rim

Home

Zipp Speed Weaponrys has developed a new aerodynamic rim shape named Project Firecrest which is applied to the 404 Tubular, 404 Carbon Clincher, 808 Tubular, and 808 Carbon Clincher. The Firecrest rim shape is the first aero concept to focus specifically on controlling airflow around the back half of the wheel.

Zipp Speed Weaponry’s has developed a new aerodynamic rim shape named “Project Firecrest” which is applied to the 404 Tubular, 404 Carbon Clincher, 808 Tubular, and 808 Carbon Clincher. The Firecrest rim shape is the first aero concept to focus specifically on controlling airflow around the back half of the wheel.

Whereas Zipp’s earlier designs placed a toroidal bulge behind the tire to reduce turbulence at the wheel’s leading edge, Firecrest shifts the widest point of the rim inward towards the hub and tapers only slightly towards the tire. In crosswinds, Zipp claims that Firecrest rims provide markedly more stable handling while it should also increase stiffness for sprinting and cornering while adding comfort and durability on rough surfaces.

The 808 Carbon Clincher like the 404 also uses Zipp’s proprietary heat-resistant resin to improve braking performance and handling by preventing the spikes in rim temperature and tire pressure that can occur under heavy, continuous braking.
