Speed E-Bike Sales Scores 30% Growth in Holland
AMSTERDAM, THE Netherlands – in Holland the sale of fast and registered electric bikes increased by a big 30.3% in 2015. This could prove to be an indication on how the sale of this new electric bike category is developing in other leading European e-bike markets too.
According to the VWE data, a bureau specialized in tracking the sale of registered vehicles, some 3,000 speed e-bikes or speed pedelecs have been registered in 2015. The biggest sellers of speed e-bikes on the Dutch market were in 2015 Sparta, Riese & Müller and Stromer.
Other brands are not listed as VWE only registers the Top 25 moped brands in the 25 km/h category. That the other brands are not listed has also to do with the fact that they make use of the legal possibilities to offer speed e-bikes without license plates. This is possible until the end of 2016. As of 2017, this is no longer possible as by then speed e-bikes are considered by law as mopeds.
Sparta remains market leader
Sparta was also in 2015 by far the largest in speed e-bikes. Of the total of 2,914 sold speed e-bikes by the three leading brands 1,535 came from Sparta. Riese & Müller sold 907 put on plate and Stromer 472.
New European type-approval
As mentioned, a lot of changes are coming into force in the legislation on the fast electric bikes. 2016 is counted as a year of transition. As of January 1st, 2017 all speed e-bikes/speed pedelecs have to be type-approved according to the new European approval requirements. More on that can be found here:
