Of course, UK ‘household name’ cycle retailer brands took centre stage, literally, with Evans, Raleigh and Halfords (interestingly only via its recent acquisition Boardman) going head to head on the largest stands near the show’s centre, mirroring what looks increasingly to be a tussle for the lucrative high quality end of the UK cycle market.
Plethora of innovative UK firms
The presence of major bike brands including Giant, Cannondale and Cube was also no surprise at all, but perhaps most encouraging was the plethora of smaller often innovative UK firms, including that rare breed, UK manufacturers, holding their own against all the bigger players.
The likes of industry stalwarts Hope (bike component manufacturers) were joined by newcomers such as Shand (Scottish-based bespoke bike builders) and complemented by new-tech firms such as Visijax (‘wearable lighting technology’). Not to be outdone far easten tech innovators like Tannus (‘solid’ tubeless tyres) also appeared to be reaping the rewards of plentiful advance publicity, with visitors flocking to their stand.
Solid representation for electric bikes
Naturally road bikes had a strong showing with relatively recent additions such as disc brakes and electronic shifting now clearly taking a grasp on both the industry’s and the public’s conscious. There was also solid representation for electric bikes (including a very popular test track and cutting edge models such as the Mando Footloose, Rotwild’s Brose-powered mountain bikes and Switzerland’s Stromer) and touring and ‘adventure’ bikes.
Nr 1 consumer cycle show in UK
The show vies with Birmingham’s September Cycle Show for the title of the #1 consumer cycle show in the UK (though the Midlands based show has a single trade and press day in advance of the main show).
The London Bike Show was launched in 2011 with the 2012 show attracting 85,000 visitors; it remains to be seen if the show continues to grow and just how the stats stack up when The Bikes Show’s coincident ‘sister’ shows (the Outdoor, Triathlon and Dive shows) are taken into account.
