Cambodia’s e-bike and bicycle export value up 27%

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – The pandemic inevitably had an impact on e-bike and bicycle production in Cambodia in 2020. It has become one of the leading bicycle exporting countries. Last year, the total value of bicycles shipped to overseas market increased by 27% from 2019 to approximately $527 million (€ 439 million).

According to Cambodia’s Ministry of Commerce who revealed these figures in a Phnom Penh Post report this week, the country’s main export markets are US, EU, United Kingdom, Colombia and Korea. Recently Cambodia and China concluded a bilateral Free Trade Agreement. It is still unclear how that will impact the bicycle industry.

Bicycle export volume

From January to September of 2020, the country shipped a total of 1.5 million units. During these nine months the export volumes to Europe’s main export destinations from Cambodia amounted to 360,000 units to Germany, 150,000 to Belgium and 90,000 to the Netherlands as this trade journal reported recently. For now, the Ministry of Commerce’s report did not reveal the exact export volume to the EU for the whole of 2020.

According to the Ministry’s spokesman Seang Thay: “Production and export of bicycles from Cambodia to international markets will continue to increase further in 2021. However, manufacturers must also pay more attention to quality to be able to meet the market demand of buyers. There are currently five bicycle assembly plants in Cambodia.” These are:

  • A and J (Cambodia) Co, Ltd
  • Speedtech Industrial Co, Ltd
  • Smart Tech (Cambodia) Co, Ltd
  • Xds Bicycle (Cambodia) Co, Ltd
  • Evergrand Bicycle (Cambodia) Co, Ltd.
