    ZEIST, The Netherlands - Undeniably European e-bike sales took a step back last year. In 7 European countries which have already reported their market statistics for 2023, the total volume decreased by 8%, from 4,555,264 units in 2022 to 4,178713 last year.

    Merida Q1 figures show bicycle producers continue to struggle

    CHANGHUA, Taiwan - Compared to the first sales quarter of the previous year, Taiwan's second-largest bicycle manufacturer Merida Industry Co., Ltd. has had to digest a hefty 29.8% sales drop to TWD 5.86 billion (€167.78 million) in the first three months of the current 2024 financial year.

    WFSGI appoints new CEO

    ITTIGEN, Switzerland - Emma (Mason) Zwiebler has been appointed World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) chief executive officer from May 1, 2024. Her new position follows her term as interim CEO since November 1, 2023 since former CEO Robbert de Kock left the organisation.

    PARIS, France - After four years of strong growth, the French market value of bicycle, parts, and accessories combined decreased by 5.5% in 2023. "There's a dichotomy between bicycle use, which is still growing steadily, and new bike sales, which are running out of steam this year," explained Jérôme Valentin, vice president of the Union Sport & Cycle at the presentation of the 2023 market data.

    New EU rules on tyre imports to prevent deforestation

    BRUSSELS, Belgium - Starting in 2025, products and raw materials contributing to deforestation will need to comply with new regulations. Importers will have to prove that their products, such as rubber used for bicycle tyres, have not contributed to deforestation.

    US e-bike market threatened by 25% tariff on lithium-ion batteries

    WASHINGTON, USA - The latest publication by the US Trade Representative (USTR) regarding tariff action has not brought any clarification whether the import of lithium-ion batteries for e-bikes from China will be hit by a 25% additional duty. "Some ambiguity remains on what the announcement means for existing bicycle products receiving exclusions from Section 301 tariffs," writes PeopleForBikes, Policy Counsel Matt Moore in a statement today.

    Fox Factory Q1 bicycle sales drop partially offset by acquisition

    DULUTH, Georgia - In view of the current problems in the global market, Fox Factory Holding Corp.'s Q1 net sales met expectations; a 16.6% drop to USD 333.47 million (€309.91 million) compared with 2023. Bicycle product sales under the Specialty Sports Group (SSG) umbrella couldn't stop the downward trend but were nearly offset by the sales integration of recently acquired Marucci Sports.

    Pierer Mobility announces in-house management changes

    WELS, Austria - According to stock-listed Pierer Mobility AG's e-bike subsidiary Pierer New Mobility (PNM) the developments in the bicycle market prompted them to implement a strategic realignment in 2023 already. Now PNM-Germany MD and Sales Manager DACH Bernd Lesch left the company at the end of April at his own request, the company has taken the chance for a reorganization of the management with an in-house solution.
