VIENNA, Austria (22 May 2000)–With the help of this spring’s fantastic weather conditions the Austrian motorized two-wheeler market saw its first quarter sales increase big. The moped segment (up to 50cc), for example, was up 23.8%. According to the Austrian motorbike association ARGE2Rad, automatic scooters sales (50-125cc) were also up. In a press release, the organization says that “the youth appreciate the scooter’s trendy brand image and design.” 125cc scooters make up the largest portion of the Austrian market with a 42% share. Scooters are followed by choppers (39%), enduros (13%) and sportbikes (6%). In contrast, motorcycle sales (so-called big bikes). On the other hand, sales in the motorbike (“big bikes”) segments were down 7.8% compared to the same period in 1999. (JB)
