NICE, France (31 August 2000) — While training in southern France two-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and teammate Tyler Hamilton were hit by a car. Despite the fact that Armstrong’s helmet was smashed to pieces, neither cyclist was hurt badly. Each was banged up pretty good and have a few bruises.
Armstrong, Hamilton and US Postal Service teammate Frankie Andreu were training on a country road outside of Nice when a car coming in the opposite direction missed its turn and ran into them. Andreu was able to swerve out of the way.
Armstrong is currently recuperating at his home in Nice. The crash is not expected to keep Armstrong from participating in the Olympic Games. (JW)
