PRAGUE, Czech Republic (28 August 2000) — The Austrian-Taiwanese company KTM, best known for its motorbikes, has taken over the Czech Republic’s third largest bike maker Lion Bike Sumperk. Though Lion Bike posted a turnover of EUR13.9 million last year, it had problems financing its production. Lion Bike Company produces about 100,000 bicycles a year, primarily children’s bikes but also mid- to low-end models. This is an assortment that is very compatible with KTM’s high-end bike models. Lion Bike currently exports the majority of its production to Western Europe. Only 15% of its production remains in the Czech Republic. Financial details of the deal were not available. (MM)
