NOALE, Italy – Italian scooter major Aprilia SPA has taken over Moto Laverda. According to Aprilia chairman Ivano Beggio, “the acquisition is part of our plan to establish a leading motorcycle pool that draws from Italian industry tradition and its extraordinary technological capacity in this sector. It will enable us to take on competition on a global level.” Beggio adds that despite Aprilia’s heavy involvement in the relaunch of Moto Guzzi, it has decided to commit itself to Laverda as well.
In 1999 Aprilia produced 320,000 scooters and motorcycles, second only behind Piaggio in Europe. The company has 1,840 employees. Throughout the nineties Laverda faced financial and marketing problems, partially the result of its product diversification policy, which wasn’t very successful.
