MUNICH, Germany – (October 17) Based on the figures of the respective national registration systems of the EU countries, the German Motorcycle Industry Association (IVM) noted that the market for motorized twowheelers continues to grow. During the first six months of 2000 some 1,5 million new motorized twowheelers were sold in the European Union. During this period, the 50cc category posted double-digit sales increases in Spain and Austria. In Italy, Europe’s biggest 50cc market, sales dropped 10% (to a still ampressive 317,180 units). This is more than likely caused by the compulsory helmet. Italy saw a 40.5% sales explosion of over 50cc models in the same period to a total of 307,306 units. (JB)
