WATERLOO, WisconsinUSA (2 October)– Trek is recalling about 18,300 road bike stems sold under the Icon brand, Trek’s in-house component line. The recall is being made in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The bolts on the handlebar stems can break, resulting in the handlebars detaching from the bikes and causing the riders to lose control and crash. So far, there have been three reports of handlebar stems breakage, resulting in two riders suffering injuries.
The Icon Havana and Bordeaux stems were sold as separate upgrading items, and installed on various 1999 model Trek and Klein road bikes. Recall is relatively easy, because Trek as a dealer-only brand knows exactly where these stems have gone, and will provide their dealers with detailed information. (WJ)
