TAIPEI, Taiwan (29 January) – The Giant Manufacturing Co. announced in mid-January that in 2000 that for the first time ever the company has produced more than 4 million bicycles within one calendar year. The 2000 production totals represent an increase of around 30% over production totals from 1999, company officials said.
Giant accomplished the manufacturing feat through its four plants worldwide, including two factories in mainland China, one factory in Taiwan, and one factory in the Netherlands. The bulk of the volume came from the China plant located in Kunshan, just outside of Shanghai. Running five assembly lines in 2000, the Kunshan plant approached its annual capacity of 2.1 million bicycles for the year, company officials said. The Kunshan plant has also already added a sixth assembly line, which will go into operation in February 2001, after the Chinese new year. The new assembly line will extend the factory’s capacity by an additional 400,000 units per year. In other plans, Giant also announced that 2001 would see marketing and sales drives into new growth markets, including China and Eastern Europe. (DF)
