KARVINA, Czech rep – (March 27) Shimano will start pre-production at their provisional Czech plant in Karvina (Moravia) next month. The total investment for the new plant will allegedly reach euro 62.8 mn (US$ 59.5 mn). Shimano held an official breaking ground ceremony last week for the new plant which is planned to be ready in November this year. With the new site in the Czech Republic the global operating bicycle component giant will open its second production site in Europe. Shimano already owns a plant in Italy. The Czech factory started advertising for workers two weeks ago. In April about 40 new Shimano employees will start a training program and pre-production of components in a building that is already rented by Shimano. The choice for the Karvina site was decided on its investment readiness. The Czech state granted an euro 1.2 mn subsidy. (MM)
