BIKE EUROPE: KOSZALIN, Poland – The first Chinese production centre in Europe is to be established in Koszalin, Poland. In May 2004 the Chinese bought five hectares of land and announced that in December they would start the production of bicycles. Within a couple of months machines were brought in; the Chinese employed 140 people which were trained by Chinese instructors and in December started the mass production of bicycles.
In July 2005 the construction of a new production hall is planned which is a PLN 10 million (€ 2.5 million) investment. For the whole of 2005 at least 200,000 bikes should be assembled in the new Koszalin factory which is the first on the large industrial estate. The Chinese intend to turn Koszalin into the capital of Chinese industry in Europe for which they want to buy a further 17 hectares. Next to bikes, the planned production in Koszalin also includes light bulbs, plasma TV-sets, forged steel and other high-tech components. Currently the main investor in Koszalin is the Chinese Athletic Group. (MU)
