TOKYO, Japan (Sep 15) – Bridgestone Cycle Co announced Wednesday it has found that about 19,500 bicycles for small children sold between last October and August in Japan were equipped with handbrake components containing asbestos in a possible violation of a government ordinance and will offer free exchanges of the brakes from Friday.
The company said it believes the adverse impact on health and the chance of airborne diffusion of the fibrous material are minimal because the component, brake lining, is hardened by kneading and encased and hardly wears even after long-term use.
