LUDHIANA, India (Nov 8) – The Ludhiana bicycle industry has come forward in support of the Hero Group which announced the closure of its two sister concerns- Highway Industries and Rockman Industries cycle divisions – on account of “disturbed labour conditions”. Terming the decision as “painful and unfortunate”, the industry representatives asserted that it was difficult for any unit to continue its business operations in the long-run amid workers’ action. “Considering the present status of labour problems, the Hero group did not have any other alternative. They were forced to close down their divisions, which was done with a lot of pain,” Avon Cycle Ltd Managing Director Onkar Singh Pahwa said.
Justifying the decision, Engineering Export Promotion Council Chairman (Bicycle Panel) Satish Dhanda said: “In today’s stiff competition era, you cannot afford to bring down the quality and hamper production because of the labour problem as it would ruin you. And labour unrest in two divisions of Hero group has turned them unviable.”
Bicycle manufacturing units here are facing labour unrest for over last two years on various issues like minimum wages and indiscipline and many times it has taken an ugly turn with clashes taking place between labourers and companies’ personnel.(MH)
