TEL AVIV, Israel (Feb 20) -The Tel Aviv municipality is planning a network of bicycle paths linking the north and the west of the city. The project’s goal is to make bicycles an effective mode of transportation in the city, thereby alleviating its severe traffic and smog problems. The project includes building traffic islands, widening sidewalks to include special bicycle paths, installing parking facilities for bicycles, and planting trees. Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) will take the opportunity to lay high-tension power lines. The Ministry of Transport, Israel Police Traffic Police, Roads Administration, and Ministry of the Interior will set up a steering committee to promote a nationwide plan of interurban bicycle paths. Tel Aviv and Netanya will initially be linked by a bicycle path.
