NÜRNBERG, Germany – Hudson Bike is the new name for the once Sachs motor-assisted and electric Bikes. Hudson Bike is a ‘bike doctor’ who has a majority in E-bike Produktions GmbH in Nürnberg, the company that will continue the production of what once were the Sachs bikes. Behind Hudson Bike GmbH is the Darmstadt-based ‘turnaround-participation company’ Prout AG. Under the brand name Hudson Bike new electric bikes will be developed and produced in Nürnberg. Also China made two and four stroke scooters are now marketed as Hudson Bikes.
Brittijn BV, a Dutch wholesaler and importer of electric bikes made by Sachs FMT, saw its business dwindle when Sachs suddenly evaporated: a substantial part of Brittijns turnover was based on Sachs-powered bikes. Brittijn has signed a contract with Hudson Bike GmbH that gives Hudson’s owners an option to acquire a majority share in the ownership of Brittijn. With an interest in both E-Bike production and Brittijn, Hudson takes care of both the production and the distribution side: the Netherlands were a main market for Sachs motor-assisted and e-bikes.
What will happen to Sachs Fahrzeug- und Motorentechnik (FMT) GmbH, is still unclear. The company had to apply for insolvency in June, 2006. Last November it was announced that it had found a new investor and was to be taken over by a Management Buy Out. Also a new start was planned for January 1, 2007. However, that new start did not happen, and according to a spokeman of Brittijn BV, new plans were not presented by Sachds FMT.
