BMWs View on Urban Mobility

BERLIN, Germany – After the demise of the BMW C1 roofed scooter; here’s the German car and motorcycle maker’s new view on a vehicle suited for urban mobility. The project is called ‘Clever’ which stands for: Compact Low Emission Vehicle for Urban Transport. It is a narrow-wheelbase streamlined 3-wheeler with a tiny 213 cc 4-stroke single. It has an emission level of only 40 – 60 grams of CO² per km (today’s commercially available cars range from 100 to 400 grams/km). The aim was to obtain a three-star rating under EuroNCAP (=European New Car Assessment Programme). The BMW Clever will run on natural gas. To prevent toppling of the narrow vehicle, it has a computer-assisted balance system. BMW’s Michaela Müller, pr manager for BMW’s Research and Innovation Division, says it will take at least another three years before the Clever will be commercially available. Of course, with all its sophisticated technology, the Clever cannot compete with cheap, lean € 5,000 (without tax) cars. (JB)
