Bike Europe’s May edition brings you the latest in tyres. In a Special Product Report we take a closer look at for instance Vectran, the newest high density fabric claimed to make a stronger, lighter tyre with the ability to withstand extremely high pressure.

Continental and Schwalbe are using Vectran for their racing tyres, an example of this being the Continental GP4000S using a Vectran breaker belt. Vectran fabric was originally manufactured for NASA who used a very dense Vectran fabric on the Mars Lander vehicle.

Rubber compounds have also improved and become more specialized, and whereas at one time there was a “standard bicycle tyre compound”, there are now several compounds which are used to improve road holding under specific conditions. But there’s more, much more also in trekking, touring, city, and BMX tyres that are all taking advantage of new technologies brought about by fierce competition in the big bicycle races.

Look for it in Bike Europe May edition.
