AMERSFOORT, the Netherlands – For decades bikes have been the most used transport to get to and from school by children in the Netherlands. This is changing as is noted by VVN, the Dutch foundation for safe transport.

This foundation organizes pratical traffic exams for kids in which over one tenth (11%) of all schools in Holland are participating this year. The participation dropped compared to previous years because of a lacking capability to cycle by children.

Schools name as reason for the lacking capability to cycle; too little experience in cycling. One out of every ten kids shows nowadays little cycling experience. This figure doubled when compared to 2008 data.
