Planet Bicycles Enters Joint Venture With Dema Bicycles

SENICA, Slovakia – Dema Bicycles from Slovakia and Planet Bicycles from Taiwan entered into a 50 – 50% joint venture. Jan Kubicek (GM Dema Holding), Paul Lin (GM Planet Bicycle Taiwan) and Ravi Hingorani (Marketing, Bikeplanet) (photo; left to right) formed Bike Planet which is targeting the need for close to market production of city and touring bikes in Europe.

“At last year’s Eurobike we both signaled a growing need for a European assembly plant focusing on the comfort and urban bike segment on the North and West European markets,” says Paul Lin of Planet Bicycles and Jan Kubicek of Dema Bicycles. “This assembly plant should offer flexibility as well as competitive pricing and for all shorter lead-times.”

“More than 15 years experience in doing business with markets in the Netherlands, Germany and Scandinavia out of our Taiwan factory, made us well aware of the standards and quality demanded by local buyers”, states Paul Lin. “We have a well organized back-office infrastructure in Asia, which is essential to ensure the stringent quality control and to handle quickly when necessary.”

The European operation of Bike Planet will be headed by Ravi Hingorani, who has a long experience in the Dutch bicycle market.

Dema Bicycles has been in operation for over 15 years and is among the market leaders in Slovakia. “Apart from bicycles, we also produce some car parts for Toyota, so we are aware of supply chain issues and know how to work with high quality standards. Our management and systems are ISO certified,” says Jan Kubicek. “Since the Dema factory has been producing bicycles for many years, we are not facing the usual issues like staff training and start-up problems. We are making a running change.”

Bike Planet’s main markets will be the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, and Scandinavia. The product line will consist primarily of comfort and urban bikes in 700c.
