Merida Sponsor Pro Tour Team Lampre
AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands – Team Lampre-ISD will continue as Team Lampre-Merida next year. The Taiwanese bicycle company Merida has signed a sponsor contract with the Italian World Pro Tour cycling team.
The new sponsor contract also implies that Merida will succeed the Italian manufacturer Willier as bicycle supplier of the team. This news was released by the Spanish cycling website Biciciclismo. Last February at Merida’s Dealer Camp in Mallorca it was rumored that the Taiwan bike maker was to join the World Tour circuit.
Merida is especially known from the mountain bike world. The company is in fact sponsor of the successful Multivan Merida MTB team, including former world champion Jose Antonio Hermida, Ralph Näf and Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesja.
Reportedly Merida was also discussing a sponsorship deal with Spanish Movistar but these talks were not successful.
Denied by Merida
The news on the Merida sponsorship is denied nor confirmed by Merida spokesman Peter Koperdraad, general manager of Merida Benelux. “We will issue an official press release on 21 September. Until then we will deny everything”, said Peter Koperdraad. “Merida is talking with several teams and perhaps arrangements have been made. However we will not give any comment on this issue until existing contracts with current sponsors are terminated.”
