After Reaching Rock Bottom; Better Times Ahead!
AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – On behalf of the entire Bike Europe team I wish you all the best for 2014. I am sure the New Year will be a better one than 2013 and 2012 in many respects. During these years we have reached rock bottom in bike sales in Europe.
In particular the total number of new bicycles sold throughout the 28 member states of the European Union reached its lowest point in years in 2013. In money terms the drop was less; in particular in countries where the e-bike trend is strong or getting stronger. For those countries where this trend didn’t catch on just yet; don’t despair. It will come. All signs indicate that electric bicycles will spread all over Europe and even all over the globe.
In 2014 the e-bike trend will continue even stronger as speed pedelecs are appearing on the markets in big numbers. I expect that they will grow to a ten percent share in total e-bike sales.
Key question for 2014
What will be key in 2014? Deliveries! Especially when we have a sunny and warm spring. This will bring consumers back to bike shops in large numbers. Can dealers all over Europe meet a strong demand after a low level of ordering at the September and October dealershows? What will happen then in terms of deliveries? I sincerely hope (and count on it) that I ‘m not the only one contemplating on this.
Make it a great year !
