Media Markt Plans To Start Selling E-Bikes
FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, Germany – In the spring of 2016 Media Markt plans to start with the sale of electric bikes. At last week’s Eurobike show representatives from the electronics retail giant were having talks with potential suppliers.
Media Markt’s start in e-bikes is to take place as a pilot project in six stores in the Netherlands. When this pilot is successful then all Media Markt stores in the Netherlands as well as in other European countries where the retail chain is present are to sell e-bikes. This is also to take place at the webshop of the company.
Range consisting of A-brands
Three Media Markt representatives visited for two days Eurobike last week. Among them Marcel Captein, branch director of Media Markt Rotterdam center. He said, “We want to sell e-bikes from premium brands as we intend to offer a good range. By the way, the Accell Group has already said no. They do not want to do business with us,”
Asked for comments Accell’s chief executive, René Takens, said, “We get applications for selling our brands from lots of well-known chain stores and webshops. I do not speak to them. And I have not talked to the people of Media Markt.”
More than a million visitors
Branch Director Captein thinks e-bike sales at Media Markt could prove to be beneficiary for the specialist dealer channel. In particular since sales through the Media Markt stores offers consumers a huge platform for orientation where they can see and feel electric bikes. “Remember that our stores in the Netherlands attract more than a million visitors each year.”
