Schaeffler Group Brainstorming E-Mobility Future

HERZOGENAURACH, Germany – To open up for new concepts and future ideas, the German automotive and e-bike supplier Schaeffler AG wants to create its own start-ups. The Herzogenaurach-based company is closely watching its competitor Bosch and the success of its Bosch eBike Systems.

Both Schaeffler chairman Klaus Rosenfeld and his deputy and chief technology officer Peter Gutzmer confirmed in an interview in the German automotive business magazine ‘Automobilwoche’ that they are looking for ways to get involved in the start-up scene for projects like the innovative four wheel pedelec ‘Bio Hybrid’ Schaeffler introduced last year.

Transformation challenge

According to Gutzmer “the automotive industry is facing the challenge to transform their orientation from products to a customer service. Start-ups have already opened up this world with new ideas,” Gutzmer said.

At the moment Schaeffler Group is contacting several start-up groups and studies their business models. It looks as if Schaeffler has only one goal in mind: the company wants to start the serial production of its roofed four-wheeled pedelec Bio Hybrid. This will most likely be successful within a start-up structure.

Schaeffler searching for urban future mobility solutions

The Schaeffler Bio Hybrid debuted at the ‘Auto, Motor und Sport’ Congress in March 2016. The micro mobility study was introduced as the perfect urban solution. Schaeffler noted that “demand for a clean emission-free mobility leads to new individual mobility solutions for urban agglomerations”.

From prototype to serial production?

The Bio Hybrid is Schaeffler’s answer on that demand. “This mobility concept is closely positioned to a bicycle but without its disadvantages. Thanks to the pedal-assist drivetrain up to 25 km/h it can be driven without driving license and on bicycle paths,” stated Gutzmer. “The range of the Bio Hybrid’s fully charged battery is 50 km. The four-wheel platform ensures safety and stability. Due to its compact size of only 210 cm length, 150 cm height, 85 cm width and an wheelbase of 80 cm you can drive it on cycling paths. An electric reverse ensures easy maneuvering.
