Ford and German Railways Collaborate on Bike Sharing Service
FRANKFURT, Germany – The International Motor Show IAA in Frankfurt last week was Ford’s platform to present its new bike and car sharing system. According to Ford they are the first from the automotive industry to be involved in a bike sharing project.
In Germany a total of 3,200 bicycles are available for this system. The so called FordPass app helps users to find the nearest available bike and pay for it online. On the car sharing side, the app is even more versatile than that. It provides information on parking spaces and the lowest fuel prices at nearby garages.
Since 2013, German railways ‘Deutsche Bahn’ and Ford Germany are collaborating on a car sharing service. Last August, Ford announced to have reached the 100,000 milestone for one-year Call a Bike memberships for its customers in addition to the car sharing. As part of the cooperation, “Deutsche Bahn Connect”, a modular mobility concept including trains, will operate the new service and handle customer inquiries for the FordPass branded bikes. The bicycles can also be rented via the Call a Bike app.
Ford mobility provider
“As a mobility provider, we are looking for sustainable solutions as a supplement to the transportation system that makes sense, particularly in inner-city areas,” said Steven Armstrong, group vice president and president, Europe, Middle East & Africa, Ford Motor Company, announcing the partnership at New Mobility World during the IAA. “For this reason, we are launching the FordPass bike sharing service together with Germany’s market leader, Call a Bike.”
