SULZBACH/RATINGEN, Germany (16 May 2000)–On 10 May members of the German bicycle and motorbike industry association (VFM) and the German Bicycle and motorbike parts association (FTV) decided to merge the two associations. With this step the German bicycle industry wants to meet the rising demand for one industry voice. Globalization, the shift from national to international decision making (especially within the EU market) and more effective communication were reasons cited by both associations to join forces. They will work under the motto ‘One Industry, One Voice.” The new association has been named the Two Wheeler Industry Association e.V. (ZIV) and it is based in Sulzbach. “The merger is the result of a continuous approach underlined by FTV’s corporate membership into VFM,” states a ZIV press release. The newly formed ZIV represents 102 industry members, and includes as so-called corporate members the German Bicycle Importer Association (VDFI) and the German Two Wheeler Wholesaler Association (VZG). ZIV’s new chairmen are Berthold Lönne (Prophete), Fritz Röth (Zweirad Röth) and Walter Goldbecker (Schürmann Fahrradteile). Members of the ZIV management board include Mehdi Biria (Biria), Karl-Heinz Rieß (Hercules), Harald Schmitz (Rewaco Spezialfahrzeuge), Werner Auch (Magura) and Rainer Müller (Busch & Müller). Rolf Lemberg, general manager of VFM, is now general manager of ZIV. Gerd Müller-van Ißem, general manager of FTV, has stepped back and left the association. As a result of the merger, the FTV head office in Düsseldorf was closed. (JB)
