WELS, Austria (21 December) – Sport Eybl, a large member of Intersport-Austria plans to open several Sport Eybl stores in neighboring Germany. Intersport Austria is a sporting goods (including bicycles) buying group. According to the German sporting goods retail magazine SAZsport there are already serious negotiations with downtown locations within the German states of Bavaria, Northrhine-Westfalia and Baden-Württemberg.
This action will no doubt cause serious fights between Intersport-Austria and Intersport-Germany. At present, both associations are not willing to give any comments on the upcoming controversial situation. And the umbrella organization, Swiss-based Intersport-International, is just referring to the consolidated growth of its international business.
Sport Eybl’s step into the German market will also effect the German bicycle market. Until now, Intersport-International’s private label bicycle and accessory brand Nakamura is sold through German Intersport members. But Intersport-Austria has two bicycle labels which are highly successful on their home market. Actually the mid-end Genesis brand is one of the top-selling complete bicycles in Austria. A small batch of Genesis bikes already found their way to the nearby South German market. But its low-end sister brand Taifun is actually sold in Austria only. Both bicycle brands of Intersport-Austria – Genesis and Taifun – could now cycle their way into the German market through the outlets Sport Eybl planned in Germany. It remains to be seen whatIntersport-Germany and its members think about this new competition forced upon them by another national sister association. (JB)
