UCI Approved Disc Brakes ‘Close to Introduction
TAIPEI, Taiwan – The big factor that’s expected to boost road bike sales – the use of disc brakes in professional road racing and in races like the Tour de France – is close to its introduction through UCI approval. This was announced at a meeting during the 2015 Taipei Cycle Show.
The ‘Disc Brake Group’ of the World Federation Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) said this. This group has provided the UCI with all technical requirements documentation; an overview of the test status of disc brakes at all ProTour teams as well as a proposal on the introduction procedure.
Disc brake standards
Jeroen Snijders Blok, Chairman of the WFSGI Bicycle Committee (and Accell Group COO), that consists of all leading players in the bike industry, said at the meeting during the Taipei Cycle Show, “Very soon we can expect a decision by the UCI on when disc brakes can be used in UCI races. Whether it well be OK-ed to be used in UCI races that are taking place this year is not yet clear. When there’s an agreement on the introduction timing this will be communicated by the WFSGI. At that time also details will be announced on the standards the disc brakes will need to comply to.”
