Louis Garneau Recalls Bicycle Helmets

Laws & Regulations

QUEBEC, Canada – Louis Garneau Sports is voluntarily recalling the P-09 aerodynamic bicycle helmet. This helmet, certified according to CPSC standards in December 2013, was manufactured in early 2014 and its production was tested internally by both Louis Garneau and its contract manufacturer as well as externally by independent laboratories.

In all cases it passed the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) requirements. However during a recent production, the helmet cover part made of a polycarbonate micro-shell failed the manufacturer’s head impact tests.

The remaining units left from the previous production were then retested and failed the cold condition testing. This has led Louis Garneau to think that there may be a degradation of the product over time. In its current version, the helmet may not prevent injuries in the case of a severe accident.

Date sticker

The helmet is sold under the model name P-09. It is offered in three colors: 7E5 (White-Blue), 6Y8 (Black-Red) and 6Y9 (White-Silver), the style number is 1405632. The recalled helmets have a manufacturer’s date sticker which reads Jan 2014. Helmets having the above mentioned manufacturing date are being recalled.

Consumers should immediately stop using these helmets and return them to the dealer for replacement or a refund. Independent Bicycle Dealers sold these helmets from January 2014 through September 2014.

The recall includes 1,180 units and the helmets were made in China.
