Draft Cargo Bike Standard Open for Public Review
BERLIN, Germany – The German draft standard for cargo bikes DIN 79010 has been published for public review. At this point, it is only available in German. The deadline for free of charge review and comment is 1 April 2019.
This new document specifies requirements and test methods for single and multi-lane transport and cargo bicycles. It includes those with electric motor support for the transport of goods and persons. It does not apply to bicycles in accordance with a standard like ISO 4210, ISO 8098 (children’s bicycles), EN 16054 (BMX bicycles) and EN 15194 (EPAC bicycles).
The start of the development process for a EU Safety Standard for cargo bikes has been announced in September 2017, as Bike Europe reported.
At that time the preparation for national documents had already started in France and Germany. These could serve as a basis for a European standard.
In addition to the popularity in the Netherlands, cargo bikes of all types and sizes are being increasingly sold in Germany, Denmark, France and the United Kingdom. The cargo bike is not included in the ISO 4210 ‘Safety Requirements for Bicycles’ which is the safety standard for City, Trekking, MTB, Road, and Young Adult bikes.
