Campagnolo’s Electronic Shifting Available in 2012

VICENZA, Italy – It is called Campagnolo EPS (Electronic Power Shift) and the introduction was not big news anymore, only when. Last season, the system was extensively tested by Team Movistar and in the course of 2012 it will be available on the market for consumers.
“We are every confidence in this electronic shifting system,” said Movistar manager Eusebio Unzue. “The riders are very happy.”
The EPS system will be available in two versions: Super Record EPS and Record EPS.
An important difference between both group sets is the use of more titanium and the ceramic derailleur pulleys in the Super Record EPS, resulting in a lower weight. The Super Record EPS weights 2,098 grams, the Record EPS 2,184 grams.
Campagnolo EPS consists of a power unit, an interface, front derailleur and rear derailleur both with an electric motor, a set of Ergopower shifters and a cable kit. The brakes and cranks are the same as in the mechanical group.
The Campagnolo EPS drivetrain is an organic set of mechanical and electronic components that work together in an integrated way. According to Campagnolo both derailleur are completely waterproof and based on lab-conducted tests it are capable of being immersed in water for 30 minutes at a depth of one meter without any water leaking inside.
The EPS rear derailleur is comprised mainly of a mechanical structure, derived from the mechanical gear and composed of a derailleur rod/parallelogram/derailleur cage. As with the derailleur, the electronic rear derailleur actuator is composed of a gear motor box and a sensor, the built-in resolver, that reads its movements.
As with the mechanical rear derailleur, it is possible to optimise its position with respect to the frame and chain by acting on two adjusting screws: the screw that adjusts the mechanical end stop and the screw that adjusts the distance between the upper pulley and sprockets. By using these screws it is possible to optimise the installation of the rear derailleur and increase the precision of its operation.
