BARCELONA, Spain – In the next four years, online sales in Europe will amount to 172 billion euro. According to figures of Forrester Research, the size on the European online market is still significantly smaller than the US market which will amount an estimated 198 billion euro in 2014 already.

2011 web sales revenues in Europe were 97 billion euro. In the US online sales are expected to hit 166 billion euro in 2012 predicts Forrester Research. More than two-thirds of the online population in the US buys something online every year, and that number is growing rapidly.

UK and Germany

By 2016, online sales will account for over 14 percent of total retail sales in the UK and more than 10 percent in Germany. According to Matthew Shay, CEO of the US National Retail Federation (NRF), these numbers make clear that retailers should keep up with all technological developments. “In these days retailers have to make sure that the way they present their brand is optimized for the devices that your customers are using and second the in-store technology should be upgraded to meet their consumers’ needs.”

‘Take the next step’

“The world is changing. It is up to us to take the next step. If you do not, then someone else does for you”, said Matthew Shay at the Global E-commerce Summit which took place at the beginning of June.
