EU’s Leading E-Bike Market Sees Sales Grow by 16%
AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – Sales of electric bikes seems unstoppable in the Netherlands; one of Europe’s leading e-bikes markets. Continued growth is 2014 stood at a big 16.1%.
According to the yearly market study by industry and trade associations RAI and BOVAG a total of 223,000 e-bikes were sold in the Netherlands last year. Market share wise this number means that the Netherlands is a frontrunner for the whole of Europe as 21.2% of all sold bicycles is now electrically pedal-assisted.
Regular bikes sales also up
After years of decline also sales of regular bikes were again growing in 2014; by 4.2% to a total of 1,051,000. The same holds true for the money the Dutch spent on buying new bikes and electric bicycles. The total amount grew by 11.2 to over 886 million euro. The biggest part of that amount was spend at IBDs; 71%. This represents a 3% growth compared to the dealer’s distribution market share in 2013.
14.5 billion kilometers
The Dutch ride a total of 14.5 billion kilometers on their bikes annually. That number is growing every year mainly because of the use of e-bikes. 12% of all travelled kilometers by bikes are on electric ones.
